This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Amateur Astronauts' or 'Environmental Criminals'?
News that an all-civilian crew have been rocketed into space, aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9, is being hailed as the next phase of 'Space tourism' (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/sep/15/spacex-rocket-to-take-off-with-worlds-first-all-civilian-crew). The diverse (but selectively photogenic) four person 'crew', are completely redundant. The rocket's entire operation is regulated from the ground by the Kennedy Space Center. This is, in many ways, a totally self-indulgent exercise, adding enormously to 'greenhouse gas' emissions. The project was given the marketing label 'Inspiration4-all'. A more accurate label might be 'Attract rich bucket listers, whilst speeding destruction of the planet'!
