This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Passive Smoking Gun?
It's sometimes difficult to know whether to laugh or to cry. The tobacco firm, Philip Morris International, have bought the UK inhaler maker, Ventura, for £1.1bn (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/sep/16/tobacco-philip-morris-takeover-uk-inhaler-vectura-health). The inhalers are for asthma, a respiratory disease, sufferers. On the one hand, I suppose we should be happy that Philip Morris is diversifying away from tobacco products. On the other hand, they do not appear to be stopping cigarette production/ advertising. Philip Morris also, of course, managed to accumulate their investment money by selling health-damaging products over decades. The company (like other cigarette manufacturers) have markedly increased the incidence of respiratory diseases in many countries. One can only hope, that profits from inhaler sales, will not be used to push smoking and vaping products!
