This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Bonfire of the Vanities?
French scientists, have used a chamber, to investigate air pollution generated by a garden bonfire (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/sep/10/pollutionwatch-bonfires-environment). Their study found, that a bonfire of garden waste, produced up to 30 times more particle pollution (otherwise known as 'smoke'), than a log-burning stove. Unremarkably, the bonfire's emissions were similar to those emitted by wildfires. Smoke from the log-burning stove, however, had about 12 times more cancer-causing polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The basic advice is to junk your log-burning stove and compost your garden waste.
