This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Fish Oiling the Wheels of Life
People are repeatedly advised, that taking daily capsules of omega-3 fish oils are good for the health of their joints and their circulatory systems. Omega-3 fish oils belong to the class of unsaturated fats that are better for human health than saturated counterparts. Independent tests on fish oil supplements from 60 large retail brands have shown, however, that 10% are 'rancid' before they are sold (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jan/17/revealed-many-common-omega-3-fish-oil-supplements-are-rancid ). In fact, nearly 50% of fish oil supplements sold were just under the recommended maximum limit for rancidity. As the capsules are sold in bulk and may be taken over several months, the oils are likely to continue the process of deterioration. They will be distinctly past their 'sell by date'. People wouldn't normally swallow rancid fish oil supplements unless they thought it was 'doing them good'.
