This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Papal Logic?
I don't normally comment on religion (it's very far from any of my areas of expertise). I do, however, find the comment from Pope Francis that couples, who choose pets over having children, are showing "a certain selfishness", a touch strange (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/05/pope-couples-choose-pets-children-selfish ). One might ask 'to whom are they being selfish?'. Surely priests (including popes), who choose not to have children for religious reasons, can also be accused of selfishness? It's not exactly as if the planet is short of humans. Pope Francis suggests that folk should look after the Earth's environments more carefully. Maximising the number of people, may not be compatible with this? Perhaps, the pope simply doesn't like cats and dogs or some relationships between people and their pets?
