This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Where's the Beef (From)?
Following its take-over, UK supermarket ASDA pledged to only sell British beef in its stores (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jan/07/asda-ditches-pledge-to-sell-only-british-beef-over-higher-prices). That pledge lasted only a year and was achieved in a single month. ASDA will now also stock Irish beef, after a 20% increase in the cost of the British equivalent. British beef now costs more to produce, following increases in the money that has to be paid for feed, fuel and fertiliser. Of course, if they want to save money, ASDA customers could simply eat less beef. It will be interesting to see what happens when the 'new' trade deal with Australia matures. Exporting beef from 'downunder' will drive up carbon emissions.
