There is consternation in the USA that their Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), apparently working to a new agenda of not 'increasing red tape', has declined to legislate about permitted levels of perchlorate in drinking water (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jun/18/epa-water-perchlorate-trump-rocket-fuel). Perchlorate is a chemical, found in rocket fuels, fireworks et cetera, which blocks the functioning of the foetal/neonatal thyroid gland. This results in the endocrine disorder of Cretinism. In this condition, lack of thyroid hormones in early development, curtails the development of the brain, producing profound intellectual impairments. The condition is permanent unless the baby is given thyroid hormone replacement throughout early life. Reportedly, the vast majority of US states already have problems with perchlorate contamination in their soils. The response of the EPA seems short-sighted as the costs (financial and personal) of increased Cretinism would be vast.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
