This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Spray on 'Skin'
The Israeli Company, Nanomedic, is marketing the 'Spincare system' using a technique, not unlike that of web-spinning spiders, to create a 'skin' for burns patients (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/04/spider-man-style-medical-gun-spins-out-skin-substitute-for-burns). The hand-held device can be brought to the patient's bed and uses electricity to generate nanofibres from a contained fluid. The 'skin' generated by the contactless device, is a flexible replacement for, otherwise painful bandaging that needs to be changed periodically. With the 'skin', patients can move about better, with less discomfort and can even take showers. Rather obviously, the technique is appropriate for superficial rather than deep burns. Amazing how animals can inspire technology!
