This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Planet Meat?
It has taken many decades, for fossil fuel producers to finally grudingly accept their products make major contributions to global heating. Before being forced into acceptance, they felt free to attack (or pay someone to attack) anyone or any institution, suggesting climate change was a real and serious issue. They do not appear to be changing their activities but they have become more nuanced and polite in their dialogues. George Monbiot notes, however, there's been no similar 'civilising' (following recognition) by the livestock farming lobby (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/14/livestock-farming-soy-soyboy). Meat and dairy production also intensify climate change. These activities take up massive areas of land and generate emissions of 'greenhouse gases'. Food industries had many lobbyists at Cop28 and Monbiot believes that the emissions from this sector, were completely underplayed. He was profoundly unimpressed by a UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) 'report', presented at Cop28. It seemed distinctly pro-corporate. Monbiot dismisses the FAO is a 'major cog in the meat misinformation machine'. It would certainly help if folk, in general, got more of their protein from non-animal sources. That's a message worth strongly advocating, without calling its messengers names.
