This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. Plants We Used To Use 149. Elder
The hollow stems of Elder (Sambuca nigra) were used, when safely blowing on kindling, to make fires. Only the plant's flowers and berries are, after cooking to destroy toxins, edible. Both can be employed in wine making. Berries can also flavour gin or be used to produce syrups and cordials.
