This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. A Rather Large Hourly Ice Cube!
The Greenland Ice Cap is currently estimated to be losing 30 million tonnes of ice per hour! This is 20% more than had been previously thought (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/17/greenland-losing-30m-tonnes-of-ice-an-hour-study-reveals). This ice loss, might well collapse the North Atlantic Ocean currents. This disturbance would dramatically further alter weather patterns in the Northern hemisphere. Ice loss will also reduce the planet's albedo. Less solar radiation will be reflected back into space, accelerating the pace of global heating (and causing more melting). Rather obviously, waterlevels will climb in an area, where many of its cities are coastal. Is this a tipping point?
