This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Birds in Lockdown
As a consequence of the Avian 'flu outbreak, British poultry will, like a majority of Covid-19-affected humans, will find themselves in lockdown (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/04/all-hens-and-other-farm-birds-to-be-kept-inside-in-gb-avian-flu-crackdown). Rather weirdly, any eggs produced indoors will still be able to be labelled 'free-range' for another 16 weeks. Actual poultry meat will also be able to use the same epithet for the next 12 weeks. I guess that that means that all the Christmas turkeys this year will be 'free-range?
