This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Illegal Levels of Air Pollution a Factor in Death of Nine Year Old Child
It has been known for decades, that the levels of air pollution (notably nitogen dioxide and particulates from vehicles), in many UK cities, exceeds WHO guidelines. It has also been known for decades, that these pollutants have serious health impacts (including causing premature deaths), especially in people with respiratory disorders, including asthma. The dots have now been drawn by the coroner looking into the death of 9 year-old Ella Kissi-Debrah, who spent most of her life near the busy South Circular Road in London (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/dec/16/girls-death-contributed-to-by-air-pollution-coroner-rules-in-landmark-case). He ruled that the air pollution was clearly a factor in her death. It looks then, as if local politicians are not going to be able to sweep exceeding guidelines under the carpet for much longer. They might even take on the car lobby. I wonder, however, why local Doctors (as an asthmatic, she must have seen them), were not more insistent in advocating the family move to a home with cleaner air. I appreciate that this might be expensive and difficult but it might have saved Ella's life.
