This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

We Are 'World Class' in Air Pollution in the UK?
It has been known for sometime, that air pollution carries serious health risks to humans (and their associated animals). The consequences of a Covid-19 infection are, for example, greatly worsened by high levels of vehicular emissions in the atmosphere. in the UK (as elsewhere), there was a marked improvement in air quality, over the period of lockdown produced by the Covid-19 pandemic (obviously, at least, partially reflecting reduced travel). Worryingly, recent studies have shown that air quality is now worse in 80% of UK cities and large towns than it was before the pandemic (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/dec/10/air-pollution-roars-back-in-parts-of-uk-raising-covid-fears ). This may well raise new Covid fears, as the vaccination programme is only in an embryonic stage. As worrying to me, however, is the 'bounce back's' illustraion of just how difficult it is the change human, air-polluting behaviour! The prognosis is not good.
