This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Strange Brew?
Brewing beer, produces lots of carbon dioxide. This gas is, of course, one of the major causes of climate change, as it produces the 'greenhouse' effect (trapping solar energy that would, otherwise, be reflected into space). A microbrewery in Birmingham Michigan, Griffin claw, is investing in carbon capture technology from Earthy Labs of Austin Texas (https://thefullpint.com/beer-news/griffin-claw-brewing-partners-with-earthy-labs-to-reduce-co2-emissions/). This will enable them to capture the carbon dioxide released by the yeast in the brewing process (alcohol is a product of anaerobic respiration) and to use it later in carbonating and packaging the beer. Although it is unlikely to abolish Griffin claw's carbon footprint, it will substantially reduce it. Neat! It looks as if other brewers are also considering how to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
