This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Plant'-Based Christmas Feasting
I always get a bit irritated by claims that our food is becoming more 'plant-based'. It's becoming more plant and fungi-based (they are different Kingdoms)! Waitrose, Tesco and Marks & Spencer are all seeing surges in the sales of vegan (i.e. non-animal) foods for this Christmas (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/dec/12/veganattone-and-no-turkey-crowns-its-a-merry-vegan-christmas-for-uk-retailers). This supports the claim that 26% of Brits plan to eat more vegan. Items like 'No Turkey Crowns' are reportedly flying off the shelves, as are Montezuma's 'Like No Udder' (they like a good pun) dairy-free chocolate. A most interesting development is Planet Organic's provision of 'lifestyle' foods. They will supply gluten free, dairy free, keto, vegetarian and vegan ranges. Vegan is, apparently, the fastest growing, in terms of orders. Perhaps people are starting to take the health benefits (to themselves and to the planet) of reducing their intake of animal-based foods seriously?
