This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Going to Pot?
A sad story. The mother of a 9-year old boy in the UK, learned only 2 weeks ago, that his cannabis-based medicine (Bedrolite) will no longer be obtainable from the Netherlands, even though she had 'won' the right ( https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jan/05/mother-fears-son-could-die-as-brexit-stops-medical-cannabis-medicine-supply). The boy has an extremely rare medical condition and, without the medication, suffers many daily life-threatening epileptic seizures. The boy's Pharmacy suppliers (not the family) were informed, in a letter dated 17th December 2020, that they should advise on alternative prescriptions that would be 'clinically appropriate to switch patients on to'. As the UK has not itself approved any cannabis-derived medications (these are, anyhow, very diverse), this is an impossible demand. From 1st January 2021, UK prescriptions cannot currently be filled in any of the EU countries. This seems a travesty of what should be a natural and civilised response.
