This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Look Out, Plants!
Veganuary (people signing up to eat only plant and fungus-based food in the first month of the new year), seems to be growing in popularity (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jan/05/veganuary-record-number-people-pledge-eat-vegan-food-january). 500,000 have signed up this year, which is double the total seen in 2019. Of the half million, 125,000 (25%) are in the UK. People make this pledge for a variety of reasons. A switch to vegan, has animal welfare, human health and environmental benefits. Some people will focus on one issue but others will combine all three. People in the UK, appear to be helped in their quest by some supermarkets (Aldi, Asda, Iceland and Tesco) who are, not only stocking vegan alternatives, but actively promoting their benefits. However, the planet is not just for Christmas.
