This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Appealing to the Selfish Genes
All organisms on this planet are programmed to do things that improve their DNA's chances of survival. It's consequently predictable that the UK's Prime Minister has calculated that reneiging on environmental commitments will benefit his electoral chances. Martin Kettle thinks he hopes, by this action, to gain points with his party membership as well as skewing imminent byelection results (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/20/rishi-sunak-green-retreat-ruthless-short-term-electoral-gamble). The PM claims to have moved away from 'cakeism' (having your cake and eating it) and is being 'pragmatic'. Actually, his claim that delaying urgently-needed environmental actions will not prevent the country achieving its carbon zero targets on time, is blatant 'cakeism'. The PM's basically hoping to appeal to the built-in short-termism, evident in sections of his electorate. This certainly isn't any form of leadership.
