This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Chicken Avoids the Roost?
A recent major UN report baldly warns that governments are failing to cut 'greenhouse gas' emissions fast enough. Emissions continue to rise. Currently, 20-23 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide are being released annually, than the figure needed to fulfill the Paris agreement by 2030. This (let me remind you), was to limit the global temperature rise, to 1.5 degrees Centigrade above pre-Industrial levels. The current 'small window of opportunity' is rapidly closing (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/08/un-report-calls-for-phasing-out-of-fossil-fuels-as-paris-climate-goals-being-missed). Rather obviously, governments will have to do very much better if there's to be any chance of avoiding climate disaster. The UK have always, self-importantly, claimed to lead other nations, by setting good examples. The UK's current Prime Minister is, however, reportedly not going to the next annual UN General Assembly (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/09/rishi-sunak-avoiding-un-climate-summit-over-potential-rejection). It seems that the PM is concerned he will be labelled an unambitious 'laggard'. It's clearly impossible to simultaneously strut the stage as a paragon of virtue, whilst attempting garner votes by appealing to 'motorcar man'. The PM seems like a naughty boy, who has no intention of doing his homework?
