This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Waiting For An Improvement?
Interesting to read an article, challenging the assumption that ageing is inevitably a process of cognitive and physical decline. Apparently, there are lots of 'personal bests' to look forward to post 40. Maturing folk alledgedly can expect, at defined ages, to do better at ultramarathons, chess, dressage, receiving a Nobel Prize etc., etc. (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/sep/19/never-past-your-prime-13-peaks-we-reach-at-40-or-later). I read the article to the end avidly. Sadly, the only remaining 'peak' I can apparently look forward to, is being 'happy'. This is based on a telephone survey of Americans, who claimed to be at their happiest when they reached 82! I'm not American and also deeply suspicious of 'happy'. Surely, 'happy can just mean you've lost all ability to understand what's happening to you and the world around you? You may also have forgotten just how slow you really are. Another possibility is that only unusually spritely 82 year old Americans, made it to the 'phone, before it stopped ringing. Unhappy old folk didn't get there!
