This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Money Doesn't Talk It Swears!
The UK's Home Secretary maintains her Prime Minister aims to reach his net zero commitments, without 'bankrupting British people'. It's predicted he will delay phasing out purchasing of new petrol/diesel-fuelled cars until 2035; slow down the replacement of home gas boilers; have no new taxes to make flying more expensive etc. Interestingly, cheaper flights with their 'greenhouse gas' emissions, are one factor behind a recent unexpected decline in the UK's rate of inflation (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/20/suella-braverman-net-zero-not-bankrupting-british-people). It seems a naked appeal to folk, more concerned with their personal finances than the future of the planet. 'Not wishing to bankrupt British people' is also an odd claim. The costs of not urgently dealing with the climate crisis will be very much greater. The 'strategy' also comes from a government appearing 'intensely relaxed' about making people poorer. There's been rampant increases in food and fuel prices along with swingeing elevations of mortgage payments. The current government has also wasted enormous amounts of cash on vanity projects, non-functional PPE and expensive legal support for ex-Prime Ministers. Politics is, however, always rooted in short termism (until the next vote) and votes can be bought.
