This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

From an English Country Garden
Gunnera or Giant Rhubarb is a large, popular, semi-aquatic plant from South America. It takes pride of place in the UK gardens of stately homes, universities and botanical collections. Gunnera now been classified as an invasive species. It spreads quickly, killing local flora by outshading them. In the UK, there are no specialist herbivores for this plant (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/08/uk-bans-popular-garden-plant-gunnera-after-study-finds-it-an-invasive-species). Gunnera consequently joins Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, Rhododendron and Water hyacinth etc. as UK environmental problems created by gardeners. More care should be taken before introducing alien plant species.
