This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Smoke and Mirrors
Nicotine is highly addictive. If it had been recently discovered or was only used by a small counter culture in society, it would have been banned. A charity has found, however, that almost 3.5 billion social media messages, advocating nicotine pouches and vapes, have been viewed by young people (https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/dec/08/millions-of-young-people-exposed-to-vape-posts-online-charity-says). These promotional posts have been made by manufacturers, offering discounts and 'give aways'. They've also been pushed by 'influencers', paid to advocate these products for their followers. Are we really prepared to allow the creation of the next generation of addicts? This is anti-social media!
