This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Small Potatoes (Harvest)
The UK's traditional Christmas dinner features roast potatoes, along with the turkey, stuffing, parsnips and Brussel sprouts etc. Potatoes are, however, likely to be scarce this year. After an Autumn (Fall) of heavy rains, UK farmers have had one of their lowest potato harvests on record (https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/dec/01/low-uk-potato-harvests-raise-fears-about-christmas-supplies). Its seems likely that the UK will have to import potatoes from as far away as Egypt. Although this might give the spud an increased festive feel (a la the Magi), costs will increase. Transport is also going to ramp up 'greenhouse gas' emissions even further. Can no other carbohydrate source be substituted?
