Good News Trumps Efficiency?

The UK Government's tendency to award massive contracts to people of unproven abilities continues with news that the 'purchased' rapid test for Covid-19 has not even been cleared for use by regulators (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/07/revealed-uk-rapid-covid-test-not-yet-approved-by-regulators?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other). There is not much point in having a test, if it throws up too many false positives and/or false negatives (you might as well toss a coin). I do think that, in their keenness to get a good story and to be seen to be doing something, the Government is wasting both money and a reputation for competence (if that is in anyway still intact).
