This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Leading By Example?
At Cop26 in Glasgow, the US President claimed his country would be 'leading by example' in the fight against global heating/climate change. On the 17th November 2021, his government held the 'largest-ever' auction of leases of drilling rights in the Gulf of Mexico (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/dec/13/revealed-biden-administration-was-not-legally-bound-to-auction-gulf-drilling-rights). Major oil companies purchased leases to 1.7m acres of seabed. The leases are thought to be capable of producing more than 1 bn barrels of oil and more than 4 tn cubic feet of natural gas. That will inevitably release massive amounts of climate-changing carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere! The US government made more than $190m from the deals. The US government initially said it had to proceed with the auction, after a court decision that overturned new drilling embargoes. Officials are now admitting that the court ruling, did not force them to a) make this sale and b) do so, now. More than 78m acres of the Gulf of Mexico's seabed are still available for oil/gas leasing. Is this what they call, 'leading by example'? Presumably, the US has had no experiences of extreme weather events?
