This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

'Tis the Season to be Jolly?
Winter Wonderlands are currently big business in the UK. Some can be a pleasant experience for children and their doting parents. There are, however, annual horror stories of 'rip-off' events by money grubbers (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/dec/13/even-the-reindeer-were-unhappy-life-inside-britains-worst-winter-wonderlands). The worst Winter Wonderlands have polystyrene 'snow' (more plastic pollution?), cheap fibre-board 'grottos', multiple 'santas' simultaneously handing out cheap presents on a 'conveyer belt' system and underpaid 'elves' (generally recent graduates, without a current job) who attract parental fury (welcome to the world of work!). What really damns trash Winter Wonderlands, however, is a report that, at one such location, 'even the reindeer were depressed'.
