This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The Next Generation of Climate Protesters?
Pontypridd is a town in South Wales, within the Rhondda Cynon Taf county borough (RCT) area. RCT invited members of the Young Friends of the Earth Pontypridd to receive 'good citizen' awards. This would have involved collecting a certificate and having their photos taken for publicity in the local press. The members of Young Friends of the Earth Pontypridd , although ranging in age from 10 to 13 years, were politically astute enough to recognise they would get more publicity for their cause, by publically turning the award down (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/dec/16/good-citizen-award-pontypridd-young-campaigners). The Young Friends of the Earth Pontypridd , politely pointed out that they were still traumatised by recent flooding in their town and didn't think RCT (carbon zero by 2030?) was doing enough, quickly enough, to counter climate change. Perhaps there is some hope for the planet?
