This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

More Cycle Myths Take Wing?
It is distressing, when myths are picked up by a cycle-averse media from sources with an interest in 'alternative truths'. A recent media frenzy surrounded a study claiming that London is the World's Most Congested City (have the authors never been to Mexico City or Milan?) and that cycle lanes are part of London's problem. The old more cycle lanes, less room for cars, argument (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2021/dec/13/how-a-myth-about-london-bike-lanes-and-congestion-took-flight). A report called the Global Traffic Scorecard was produced by a company called Inrix. Inrix is partially owned by Porsche cars and sells traffic data. The Global Traffic Scorecard did not mention any city in Asia or Africa, as it doesn't operate there. The scorecard didn't actually mention cycle lanes as a problem. Inrix's head of press brought them into the conversation in an interview, probably to make the Global Traffic Scorecard more newsworthy. The myths take wing!
