This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Because We Deserve It?
Moya Lothian-McLean poses the question 'why did tourists keep coming, as Rhodes and Maui burned?' Most, presumably, were neither suicidal nor 'ambulance chasers'. Folk in parts of the world have grown, however, to believe they're entitled to travel. Cheap flights and a coddled tourism industry have made it all seem very normal (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/30/tourists-rhodes-maui-burned-travel). Tourism doesn't always 'broaden the mind'. Lothian-McLean suggests, tourism generates 8-10% of the annual global carbon dioxide emissions. It all, of course, depends how, tourism is defined but it could easily be somewhat higher. Lothian-McLean says 'as the world heats up, we need to confront our urge (if it's, indeed, an urge?) to travel. Package holidays may be selected, as they involve the least actual effort, thought and planning. Perhaps, the 'urge' itself is a marketing ploy? It would be timely to consider whether the tourism 'industry' is currently too protected from the consequences of its own actions. Perhaps everyone doesn't have to be a tourist on a regular basis?
