This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

California Streaming
For the first time since 1939, a tropical storm has made landfall in Southern California. Tropical storm Hilary has produced flash flooding over an extensive area, from Mexico to just north of Los Angeles (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/21/weatherwatch-tropical-storm-hilary-makes-landfall-in-california-for-first-time-in-84-years). Places in California, normally short of water at this time of the year, have had as much as 70-150 mm of rain in 24 hours. That's more rain than some places normally see in an entire year. Yet another clear illustration of climate change? Global heating increases the power of storm systems, making it more likely that they will make landfall, before dissipating at sea.
