Fox in Charge of the Chicken Box?

The head of the United Arab Emirate's (UAE) state oil company (Adnoc) has been appointed to preside over the UN's Cop28 meeting. He's appealed to attending delegates to be 'brutally honest' about their country's emissions targets and their progress made to date (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/17/un-climate-summit-host-uae-failed-report-methane-emissions). Adnoc has failed, however, for the last 10 years, to report its methane emissions to the UN. Methane is an extremely potent (much worse than carbon dioxide) 'greenhouse gas'. It's released when oil deposits are accessed. Plugging methane leaks is one of the fastest ways of slowing global heating. Far from leaving deposits in the ground, the UAE is planning to expand its production of oil and gas. Not much 'brutal honesty' there! Who, on Earth, thought putting this guy in charge of Cop28 was a good idea? There seems a real danger of Cop28 becoming a 'greenwasher's extravaganza'.
