This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

One Giant Step For Emissions Kind?
The euphoria about the 'success' of Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity reusable rocket-powered space plane's flight to the margins of space seems a tad misplaced (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/aug/10/vigin-galactic-space-flight-vss-unity-landing). Galactic 02 left Spaceport America in New Mexico with 6 humans (crew plus passengers) onboard. The 'space tourists', including a mother/daughter combo, spent a few minutes under weightless conditions and could marvel at the Earth's curvature. One of the tickets had been won in a lottery ran by the Space for Humanity organization. Space for Humanity is a 'not-for-profit' group with the aim to 'democratize space travel'. The trouble with this 'aim', is that space tourism costs passengers large amounts of money as well as generating incredible volumes of 'greenhouse gas' emissions. Democracy isn't much in evidence, when only the rich and privilaged can afford to trash the planet on which the rest of the proles live.
