This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Invasion of the Dopplegangers?
Naomi Klein's account of her 'research' into her doppleganger, Naomi Wolf, arrives at some interesting conclusions (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/aug/26/naomi-klein-naomi-wolf-conspiracy-theories). The two Naomi's look rather similar, have comparable backgrounds and have both been writers on social issues. Wolf, however, appears to have undergone a conversion. She now touts conspiracy 'theories' and aligns herself with some folk (e.g. Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson) who didn't seem to be natural soulmates. Naomi Wolf appears to have been welcomed by her new 'colleagues', as a former 'liberal' who has 'seen the light', consequently validating their 'views'. Naomi Klein suggests that Wolf is actually getting everything she once had and lost out of the new arrangement. Namely, 'attention, respect, money, power. Just through a warped mirror'. Klein feels that, a combination of the tribulations of the Covid19 pandemic and the rise of social media (with 'clicks' and 'likes' as the currency of success), has produced this (far from unique) transformation. People appear to divide into 'tribes' operating in parallel universes, where they don't even see the 'other' as 'real' people. This, if true, doesn't augur at all well for any attempts to deal with big societal issues. Getting collective action on pandemics, mental health, healthy living, migration and climate change appears be next to impossible. Even operating a functional democracy could become a real challenge. Perhaps the internet, in its present manifestation, wasn't such a great idea?
