This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Bye Bye Bees?
Asian hornets have been sighted a relatively large number of times, this year, in the UK. Most sightings have been in Kent and Dorset (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/17/rise-asian-hornet-sightings-uk-bees). Geography suggests the hornets are slipping over from France (not, of course, on small boats). France has a serious ongoing problem with the alien Asian hornet. These powerful insects, dismember and eat Honey bees. This decimates bee populations, reducing fruit crop pollination as well as honey production. The same thing could soon be happening in the UK.
