This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The Adamant Amgdala
Some neurologists have believed for some time that they can identify conservative and liberal thinkers, on the basis of brain activity. The two groups show differences, especially in the activity of the amygdala. Confirmation bias (a tendency to give greater 'weight' to 'evidence' supporting your own world view) seems to operate in this neural region. It seems that, once an individual has a fixed opinion, his/her brain stops them 'changing their mind'. There's now a suggestion that the brains of 'Brexiteers' (people who wanted the United Kingdom to leave the European Union [EU]) and 'Remainers' (who wanted to stay in the EU) are differently 'wired' (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/aug/13/brexit-brain-science-psychology-divided-uk-debate). The basic conclusion is that no amount of 'evidence to the contrary' is likely to get substantial numbers of folk to change their minds about the benefits/disadvantages of being in the EU. Who needs opinion polls, when you've got neurologists!
