This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Not Just the Cars: The Homes They Drive From to the Office They Work At?
The fuss about extending London's Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) still lingers. Objectors should note, that ULEZ will be needed, as long as the air pollution in London remains illegally high. More Londoners die prematurely from respiratory diseases, linked to air pollutants, than are killed in road traffic accidents. Exhausts seem to be the most dangerous part of the car. Many other folk (especially the poor), will have to live with chronic ill-health. Air quality is, of course, especially problematic in a congested city centre. All the emissions there, however, don't come from cars and trucks. Scientists are now warning that new measures will be needed to counter emissions of nitrogen oxides and other pollutants, from buildings. There's lots of those in congested city centres! (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/06/ulez-just-the-start-and-similar-scheme-needed-for-buildings-experts-warn). The new measures will have to apply to both residential and commercial/industrial buildings. Heating plants will, obviously, be a focus. Expect, however, to hear howls of rage, when the well-heeled are told not to use their trendy wood-burning stoves!
