The ignorance of some people about the natural world can never be over-estimated. It is reported, from Australia, that people are very fearful of flying foxes (fruit-eating bats) that are coming into the cities (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/09/fear-of-flying-foxes-coronavirus-is-topping-off-a-bad-year-for-australias-bats). The starving bats are forced into urban locations by bush-fires and destruction of their habitats, as human populations expand into new areas. In addition to complaints about their noise, mess and smell, people now associate them with the Covid-19 pandemic. They are the wrong kinds of bats!
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
