There are reports that intensified UK gardening in the Covid-19 lockdown may disturb mating Slow worms (Anguis fragilis), who otherwise, might be love-making for up to 10 hours this month (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/01/cant-hurry-love-slow-worms-embrace-marathon-sessions-of-lockdown-loving-aoe). If they get really disturbed, these harmless, legless lizards will shed their tails. I have known confused folk to attack them with spades, believing them to be 'dangerous snakes'.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
