There have been many reports of nature thriving in the UK, as a consequence of the Covid-19 related lockdown. One area where this is definitely not happening, according to the RSPB, is the treatment of raptors (birds of prey) who appear to be shot or poisoned with increasing impunity, notably close to estates where game birds are reared (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/15/rspb-flooded-with-reports-of-birds-of-prey-being-killed). It is suggested that this illegal activity is booming, because the authorities are perceived as being too busy enforcing the lockdown to catch the perpetrators in the act.
This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.
