This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

PPE in Litter Picks
It appears that disposable masks and gloves have become prominent components of litter picks in the UK (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/06/face-masks-and-gloves-found-on-30-of-uk-beaches-in-clean-up). The Marine Conservation Society found these PPE items in one third of their annual beach cleans. The cleans were carried out in September in almost 390 coastal areas. Things were even worse in inland locations. Here almost 70% of litter picks featured these items. This is really inconsiderate behaviour, as there is no reason why these items, designed for personal protection, should not be safely disposed of by the individuals that use them. Why would you protect yourself, whilst being cavalier about the environment and the health of the people who clean up after you?
