Wolves Voted Back In

The Grey wolf became extinct in the US state of Colorado in the 1940s, following programmes of shooting and trapping. In the recent election, however, slightly more than 50% of voters approved its reintroduction to the state by 2023 (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/06/colorado-votes-reintroduce-wolves-2023). The reintroduction of this apex predator, will be based on the positive experiences of a programme in Yellowstone National Park (largely in the North-western corner of Wyoming but extending into Montana and Idaho). The wolf appears to have beneficial effects on the ecologies of regions it is active in, by preventing overgrazing by deer and other herbivores. It is unusual to let voters, rather than Biologists, decide on a reintroduction. I suspect that some farmers will be unhappy at the prospect.
