This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Climb Every Mountain?
At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, China closed its access to Mount Everest. Climbers still cannot approach the mountain from that side. In contrast, Nepal recently re-opened access from their side, as well as increasing the prices (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/23/everest-covid-cases-shine-harsh-light-on-nepalese-decision-to-open-mountain). Nepal's re-opening seems to have been distinctly premature. A Norwegian climber, at their Everest base camp, developed a lung condition and had to be flown to hospital in Kathmandu. His Covid-19 test came back positive. You really don't want rampant lung infections in people (guides as well as climbers), who have to operate at altitude!
