This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

It's In Their Own Self-Interest!
Ex-UK PM Gordon Brown makes a timely call for the G7 group of rich countries to help to pay to abolish, what he calls 'vaccine apartheid' (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/apr/12/gordon-brown-calls-for-g7-to-act-on-covid-vaccine-apartheid). Brown says the G7 at its scheduled meeting in Cornwall, should commit to paying $30bn per year towards a global Covid-19 immunisation drive. As Brown points out, in many parts of Africa, vaccinations for the virus have hardly began. It is generally accepted that vaccinated residents of G7 nations, will remain at risk of new variants, arising in poor areas of the globe, if Sars-CoV-2 persists there. Furthermore, the economies of the G7 cannot fully recover, unless the virus is controlled throughout the globe. $30bn per year seems comparatively cheap, compared with what the pandemic has cost the G7 thus far.
