This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. And the Award Goes To!
There have been some pretty crass attempts to 'sell' environmental actions in recent times. The award, however, clearly goes to the current Japanese government (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/15/japan-scraps-mascot-promoting-fukushima-wastewater-dump). The Japanese government approved developing an animated character, 'Little Mr Tritium' (tritium being a long-lasting radioactive isotope of hydrogen). The character was intended to win support for the dumping of 1 million tonnes of treated, radioactive water, from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactor. The water was intended go into the nearby sea, where people have a long tradition of fishing. Japanese people are also pretty keen on their seafood. Little Mr Tritium went down, as they say, like the proverbial 'lead balloon'.
