This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Broken Records?
2021 was the year, where many countries started to emerge from the Covid19 pandemic. It was also, however, a very poor year for attempts to deal with the climate change emergency (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/18/critical-climate-indicators-broke-records-in-2021-says-un). The UN's World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) noted that, in 2021, climate indicators broke many records. That year's floods and heatwaves exerted a heavy toll on human lives, as well as creating hundreds of billions of dollars of damage. Indeed, the WMO describe 2021 as being 'a dismal litany of humanity's failure to tackle climate disruption'. The UN are convinced that our only sustainable future, involves a total and fast replacement of fossil fuels by solar and wind power. Effective government policies, restricting climate change will only emerge, if the roles of special interests are addressed. At the moment, fossil fuel producers, in many parts of the globe, have too much power to influence envirnmental policy. This seems like putting the Tobacco Industry in charge of public health?
