This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

The Rain In Spain?
Extreme weather continues to 'hum away' in the background. This coming weekend, temperatures in Southern Spain, are predicted to exceed 42 degrees Centigrade (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/may/20/spain-braces-for-heat-wave-of-extraordinary-intensity). The 42 degree Centigrade temperature will make it one of Spain's hottest Mays. Hot, dry air from Africa, accompanied by Saharan dust, will account for this temperature rise (10-15 degrees Centigrade above the seasonal average). The Saharan dust is likely to cause some impressive sunsets. These unseasonally elevated temperatures will be hazardous to human health. They also increase the risk of forest fires, releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. France is also having an atypical April/May, breaking many seasonal heat records. Temperatures of 33 have already been reached in parts of France and could climb to 39 degrees Centigrade this month. One must observe that record-breaking weather events appear to have become almost 'normal'.
