Queen Scallop 'Charming'

Scallops are unusual bivalves, as they have around 200 tiny eyes and can swim by openning and closing their shells. A novel way of catching them, appears to have been accidentally discovered (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/18/accidental-discovery-that-scallops-love-disco-lights-leads-to-new-fishing-technique). The company Fishtek Marine, made 'potlights' that incorporated flashing LEDs. These 'potlights' were intended to be added to crab and lobster pots, to attract these tasty crustaceans. The company hoped was that 'potlights' might reduce the need to add fish bait to the pots. 'Potlights' had little effect on the crab/lobster catch but pots with these devices, rapidly filled up with highly-prized Queen scallops. The scallops were presumably attracted to the flashing lights. This discovery might well reduce environmentally-damaging bottom trawling, which is the usual way of catching these bivalves.
