This blog may help people explore some of the 'hidden' issues involved in certain media treatments of environmental and scientific issues. Using personal digital images, it's also intended to emphasise seasonal (and other) changes in natural history of the Swansea (South Wales) area. The material should help participants in field-based modules and people generally interested in the natural world. The views are wholly those of the author.

Generators Hum and the Public Pays?
The UK's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) note that the cost of decommissioning the country's 7 ageing nuclear power stations has almost doubled, to £23.5 bn (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/20/uk-nuclear-power-stations-decommissioning-cost). Worryingly, PAC reckon that the costs of decommissioning these old nuclear power stations will rise still further. Although the nuclear power stations are owned and operated by EDF energy, most of the cost of decommissioning is currently loaded on the UK tax payer. That's how EDF was encouraged to build them. Current nuclear power stations provide 16% of the UK's energy mix. The UK government has expressed an intention to increase its flock of bright and shiny nuclear power stations. More excessive decommissioning costs for future generations?
